GM Dictionary: Omens #21

It’s spooky season again!! This time we are delving into something fun: omens! A lot of these might be familiar, some might not. You might have completely different takes on these things happening where you are from. Nevertheless, omens are something interesting that can add a little bit of flavor to a new people or location in your setting. Over the course of the month we’ll be including everything from hints of what is to come to things that might be bad luck!

Abnormalities: Strange instances of normal things has been treated as a bad sign throughout history. Birth defects in a cow might indicate the fall of a farm or a gourd with an odd shape might indicate blight and famine. Strangeness has often been feared and, as a result, seen as a negative sign in superstition. Now we are much less worried about such things and often know causes that eliminate the strangeness, but a very rural fantasy town might still panic if they find a frog with an extra leg.

This is a mini-article series featuring short explanations for words more commonly used in RPGs (or potentially so!) than normal conversation. Each month will hold a different theme and each weekday will have a different word. Note: these are personal, simple breakdowns and not perfect.
