Spell Preview Double Feature!

Hello everyone! Today I wanted to share a couple of the spells I am working on. My mind has been a bit jumbled between 3 different projects so I don’t have a ton really done. Well, that’s not exactly true I have been making myself focus on the plague doctor. That being said I still have plenty of thoughts and notes on Codename: Druidstorm and an expansion to my Lovecraftian Spell supplement. So, what I have decided to do is get a couple preview spells drafted up. Below you will find four of them. Two are going to be in the druid supplement and two will be of a cosmic horror variety! Note that, yes, there are reskinned spells in here but fully new spells will be built from scratch around ideas from both earlier editions and nature itself. Additionally, some of the reskinned spells (especially the cosmic horror variety) will have mechanical changes and additions in many cases.

Swarm Call
1st level conjuration

Casting Time: 1 Action
Range: 120 feet
Components: V, S
Duration: Instantaneous

A smell similar to banana begins to permeate the area as you summon forth three swarming masses of angry bees who seek out those you have marked. Each swarm attacks a creature you can see within range. The swarm deals 1d4+1 poison damage to hits target. All swarms strike simultaneously, and you can direct them to hit one creature or several.

At Higher Levels: When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, the spell creates one more swarm for each slot level above 1st.

Briar Patch
4th level conjuration

Casting Time: 1 Action
Range: 90 feet
Components: V, S, M (a branch or vine from a thorny plant)
Duration: Concentration, up to 1 minute

Curling vines covered in razor-sharp thorns sprout out of the ground, filling a 20-foot square on ground you can see within range. For the duration, the briars turn the ground in the area into difficult terrain. When a creature enters the area for the first time on a turn or starts its turn there, the creature must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or take 3d6 piercing damage and be restrained by the briar patch until the spell ends. A creature that starts its turn in the area and is already restrained by the briars takes 3d6 piercing damage. A creature restrained by the briars can use its action to make a Strength or Dexterity check (its choice) against your spell save DC. On a success, it frees itself.

Blessing of Shulgr’zx
4th level transmutation

Casting Time: 1 Action
Range: touch
Components: V, S, M (the dried husk of a centipede)
Duration: Concentration, up to 1 minute

You bless a creature with embrace of She of the Broken Battlefield, allowing them to become a beacon of courage for your group. The blessed creature grows a few inches taller as its torso elongates and an extra set of arms grows from the new flesh. These new arms come equipped with items made of crimson and ebony chitin. When you cast this spell on a target you may choose one of the options below.

Shieldmaiden: The arms each come equipped with a shield. For the spell’s duration the blessed creature gains a +4 bonus to their AC and gains an extra reaction each round. As a reaction the creature can impose disadvantage on an attack that targets a creature within 5 feet.

Knight: One arm comes equipped with a shield and the other a one handed reach weapon of your choice. For the spells duration the blessed creature gains a +2 to AC and gains an extra reaction each round. As a reaction can be used to attack a creature within 10 feet of you who makes an attack roll against an ally. This attack roll does not interrupt or stop the attack, nor does it impose disadvantage on the attack roll.

Berserker: The arms each come equipped with a one handed weapon of your choice. For the spells duration the blessed creature may make two additional attacks as part of the attack action. One of these attacks is treated as normal, while the other is treated as an off-hand attack. This effect stacks onto the benefits of the extra attack feature. For example, a level 5 fighter with a weapon in each hand and blessed (4 total weapons) may make three normal attacks and one off-hand attack as their attack action.

Silent Song
2nd level illusion

Casting Time: 1 Action
Range: 120 feet
Components: V, S
Duration: Concentration, up to 1 minute

You create an area in which only Uma, the Bird Without Voice can be heard. For the duration, no sound can be created within or pass through a 20-foot radius sphere centered on a point you can see within range. Any creature that enters the sphere for the first time on a turn takes 2d8 thunder damage. Any creature that begins its turn within the sphere takes 2d8 psychic damage. Creatures and objects within the sphere are deafened and become vulnerable to thunder damage. Casting a spell with a verbal component is impossible while within the sphere.

At Higher Levels: When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd level or higher, the spell’s damage is increased by 1d8 for each slot level above 2nd.

If you like what you see you can help me get art for the druid supplement and/or get more cosmic horror spells designed around more of my own Great Old Ones by heading over to DT RPG and getting a copy of Lovecraftian Spells: Making Magic Eldritch. The supplement already contains nearly 30 spells and guidelines for reskinning your own spells.
