GM Dictionary: Castle Anatomy #22

This month I want to cover something that comes up often in fantasy campaigns: castles. What exactly are the different parts that we mention in descriptions and what are their purpose? Hopefully this month will help clear up some of those details.


Drawbridge

A large structure made of wood and reinforced with metal that serves two purposes. First, when lowered, it acts as a bridge over a small chasm or moat to provide access to a castle. Second, it can be raised up to the gatehouse and block the entrance, providing extra siege protection.


This is a mini-article series featuring short explanations for words more commonly used in RPGs (or potentially so!) than normal conversation.
